"You'll Have to Work with People in Your Career" is a Stupid Reason that All Professors use for Dumb Group Projects

They have really been trying it y'all.  I had four group projects were due last week. One in plain English, one in English but our interpretation of a scene from an Italian director, One in Italian with no notes, One in French, but video form.  Ah!

When students complain or respond negatively to being forced to work with other people for a grade, I have noticed quite a few professors claiming that when they have a job in their chosen field, they will be forced to work with others.  This is true.  But, as a person who has actually had a career,  I also have a few reasons why this is completely erroneous.

  1. When working with others in college, you are forced to work around everyone's schedule. People in college are not all on the same schedule.  Some people only take late classes, are off campus by 11 (me) or have jobs or kids (me) or just other responsibilities in general.  It is hard to coordinate schedules with people because, contrary to popular belief, life doesn't always revolve around campus.

  2. When you have a job and you are assigned to a project with others they are a) in the same field as you b) on the same schedule as you c)their job isn't being evaluated by your performance!

  3. Professors can get away with this bologna because most students don't know enough to realize that this is a complete lie.

  4. Again, when you have a job and are assigned to a project with others, your job isn't being evaluated by their performance.

  5. One more time. When you have a job and are assigned to a project with others, your job isn't being evaluated by their performance!

I feel this is just a lazy excuse to throw out there so that the professor has less to grade.  And hey, as someone who is most likely going into the education field, I understand.  Nobody feels like doing all this extra individual grading at the end of the semester when finals are coming and all final grades have to be done by a specific day.  Time is being crunched and all that.  Got it.  BUT, just say that instead telling us it's to prepare us for the work space.  Because that ain't cutting it.

So now, let's talk about the timing.  The week before we take the tests that are worth most of our grades, is absolutely not an appropriate time to assign huge projects.  When do these professoras expect us to study?  In the Spring, do that shit before Spring Break, in the Fall do it before Thanksgiving Break.  Good?  Good.

Anyway, I'm gonna go on and study now and hope for the best!  Smooches!
